Jon Batiste, Silk Sonic, and Olivia Rodrigo were among the big winners at the 64th Grammy Awards, which took place on Sunday night in Las Vegas.
Grammy Awards winners were mostly dominated by Jon Batiste at this year’s pre-telecast “premiere” gala, in which he walked away with the most trophies. We Are by Batiste won album of the year from a group of 10 heavyweights.
“Freedom” by Batiste was also nominated for best American roots performance, best American roots song, best scoring soundtrack for visual media, and best music video. With 11 Grammy nominations, Batiste was the most nominated artist of the year, including for best modern classical composition.
“I simply focus on my craft every day and don’t worry about anything else… Because it’s more than just fun, it’s spiritual exercise for me, “While accepting the Album of the Year award, Batiste took the opportunity to thank all of the other artists who were nominated for the honour. “Do what makes you happy, and that’s all there is to it.” He also emphasised that “it’s like a song or an album is developed and it almost has a radar to identify a person when they need it the most,” rather than saying there are “greatest” musicians or albums.
Besides winning album of the year, Batiste also performed “Freedom” in the crowd, dancing and bringing other artists off stage and into the audience, where he ended the song leaping onto a table where Billie Eilish was sitting.
This year’s Grammy Wins saw Silk Sonic take home four awards, including record of the year, best R&B performance, best R&B song of the year, and best R&B song of the year. Mars has been nominated for several Grammy Awards. Record of the year was his third time winning, and four years ago, his final solo album, 24K Magic, also took home the top honours. Silk Sonic made its Grammys debut last year with “Leave the Door Open,” which would accrue wins throughout the 2022 awards presentation.
Because of you, Mars remarked in his acceptance speech for song of the year, he and Andy will be performing this song for a long time to come. Anderson repeated, “Rest of our lives.” He subsequently remarked that it was difficult for the pair to “remain modest” when they accepted another prize for the same song. Olivia Rodrigo was named best new artist, best pop vocal album, and best pop solo performance at this year’s American Music Awards. Seven prizes were vying for her attention. During the concert, Rodrigo played her famous song “drivers licence” in front of a real automobile on a suburban street. As she won the prize for best new artist, the 19-year-old singer-songwriter broke down in tears and told the crowd it was her “greatest dream come true.”
After being nominated for the Grammys twelve times before to winning this year, Jazmine Sullivan brought home two awards, including best R&B album for her album Heaux Tales. After receiving the award for best R&B album at the Grammys, Sullivan exclaimed, “I don’t know what I heard, I nearly didn’t believe it” in her acceptance speech.
Foo Fighters won three Grammys on Sunday, taking home awards in all three non-metal rock categories, including Best Rock Album. But Taylor Hawkins, the band’s drummer, died suddenly on March 25 while on tour in Colombia at the age of 50. The band had been slated to play during the programme.
An evening of lighthearted awards presentations and feel-good music made up the 64th Grammy Awards broadcast in general, which was a fast-paced, fun-filled event. In addition to the prolonged homage to Hawkins, which included a medley of Stephen Sondheim tunes, the evening featured a filmed visit by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
Ukraine’s musicians, “who have swapped their tuxedoes for body armour,” shouted out in an impassioned speech by Zelenskyy.
In the immediate aftermath of President Zelenskyy’s words, Ukrainian artists Siuzanna Iglidan and Mika Newton, as well as poet Lyuba Yakimchuk, sang John Legend’s “Free.”
In spite of the Academy Awards’ ferocity, the Grammys went forward without a hitch, despite a few brief references to last week’s ceremony. This year’s programme put a strong emphasis on its broad range of performances since there were only nine prizes handed out.
Argentine singer Maria Becerra joined J. Balvin onstage for a mashup of their songs “Qué Más Pues?” and “In da Getto.” BTS performed “Butter” in a spy-themed performance, complete with fluid dancing and Rodrigo’s active engagement in the crowd.
Lil Nas X performed a three-song medley of his best tracks from his 2021 album MONTERO, including “Dead Right Now,” “MONTERO (Call Me By Your Name),” and “Industry Baby,” alongside rapper Jack Harlow. Lil Nas X and Doja Cat, two musicians and entertainers renowned for their goofy antics that have gone viral, both performed that night. Doja Cat’s acceptance speech for best pop duo/group performance started with her mentioning that she nearly missed her award while she was in the restroom, and Lil Nas X’s performance was professional in its quality, but not as fiery as the star’s fans and detractors may have expected.
After winning record of the year in 2021, Billie Eilish had seven nominations, but she didn’t win any. Even so, she and her brother and creative partner FINNEAS performed their song “Happier Than Ever” as the night’s fiercest rock and roll spectacular. Eilish performed while wearing a t-shirt honouring the late Taylor Hawkins, the drummer for the Foo Fighters.
Earlier in the night, Lady Gaga and Tony Bennett won a Grammy for traditional pop vocal album for their album Love For Sale, which included “Love For Sale” and “Do I Love You.” Pre-recorded video introduced Gaga to Bennett, who retired from performing last year. Gaga’s performance was accompanied by a video montage of their time in the studio, serving as a poignant reminder of their close working connection.
Grammy-winning singer-songwriter H.E.R. performed two of her own songs with Jimmy Jam, Terry Lewis, and Travis Barker before joining Lenny Kravitz for a duelling guitar rendition of “Are You Gonna Go My Way?” The two rock stars were nominated for eight Grammys, with H.E.R. winning the award for best traditional R&B performance.
The night also regularly highlighted the efforts of less prominent actors in the live music sector that has been decimated by the epidemic. Billie Eilish, H.E.R., Carrie Underwood, and Chris Stapleton were among the musicians whose managers and other staff stepped on stage during the event to introduce their individual artists and remind fans at home of the hard work that goes into making live music performances magical.
