The second wave of Covid brought a deadly complication called Mucormycosis. Recently doctors at Sir Ganga Ram hospital have treated 5 cases of gall bladder gangrene . These patients had been previously treated for Covid in July and august.
What is the presentation of this disease?
These patients had complained of vomiting, pain in the right side of the abdomen and fever. The patients either had co morbidities like diabetes and heart disease or they were treated with steroids during Covid infection.
What is Cholecystitis?
These patients had presented with severe inflammation of gallbladder without any presence of stones. Gall bladder inflammation (cholecystitis) is Common in India. Over 90 percent patients develop it due to presence of stones or the duct obstruction.
Only 10 percent develop Acalculous cholecystitis which is inflammation of the gall bladder without any stone or duct obstruction. This is a serious condition and has a high morbidity.
It is seen specifically in patients who have diabetes, any vascular diseases, a prolonged hospital stay. The gangrenous gall bladder in these patients was removed with laparoscopic surgery and patients are fine.
The doctors have said that early intervention could prevent the perforation of the gall bladder and the further complications.
