In around 108 batches of antiperspirant and deodorant body sprays from 30 different brands, benzene(a Cancer causing agent) has been found. This has been tested by Valisure.
According to FDA, benzene should not to be used in the manufacturing of any drug products. It has been classified as a class one solvent with “unacceptable toxicity”.
The US Centres for Disease Control and Prevention has said that an exposure to benzene for a long time can cause issues with immune system and with blood and bone marrow and can cause leukaemia. Benzene issued in US in dyes, detergents, lubricants and rubber but should not be used in any drug products and antiperspirants. FDA also allowed the “temporary usage “of benzene in liquid sanitizers. The upper limit for which is 2 parts per million.
Procter and Gamble voluntarily lifted 17 different Old Spice and Secret antiperspirant off the shelves. Many other brands have been tested and have shown high levels of benzene. CNN reported that “Additional batches of antiperspirants and deodorants , which Valisure said tested at levels up to 2 parts per million, include products made by Summer’s Eve, Right Guard, Power Stick, Soft and Dri and Victoria’s Secret. To date, CNN was not able to verify that any one of these products except Old Spice and Secret have been recalled following Valisure’s early November request to the effect by FDA”.
As of now no adverse reactions have been reported to benzene, yet consumers are being asked to check their products.
