A day after two Omicron cases were detected in Karnataka, one more Omicron case has been detected in Gujarat. A person aged 72 years has tested positive for the new virus strain in the city of Jamnagar, Gujarat. He had returned from Zimbabwe. A 33 year old man who had recently returned from South Africa to Mumbai via Dubai and Delhi has tested positive for Omicron. This is the fourth case detected in the country so far.
In Gujarat, the man who hails from Jamnagar has been living in Zimbabwe since the past few years. He got fever after returning to India and was advised to undergo RT-PCR. After he tested positive, he was shifted to an isolation ward in Guru Gobind Singh Government Hospital, Kharadi. The contact tracing has been initiated in all the cases above.
Jai Prakash Shivkhare, Health Commissioner of Gujarat confirmed about the same. The man had arrived from Zimbabwe on 28thNovember and had tested positive for Covid-19 on 2nd December. His samples were sent for genome sequencing.
The Government has written to five states –Odisha, Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Mizoram and Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir and expressed concern over a rapid increase in the daily Covid cases and mortality rates. The letter has urged the concerned states and UT officials to enhance the surveillance of foreign passengers and even ensure that all the samples of positive patients are sent for genome sequencing
