How to take care of your heart?

Recently a young Television celebrity died of heart attack. His death just added to the list of a lot of young people getting affected by heart attack. This calls for a reflection as to “Are we taking care of our heart?”

Modern lifestyle causes a lot of stress n our lives. While we are caught up between work and various other lifestyle stresses, here are a few ways with which we can take care of our heart.

  • Exercise: Ideally we should exercise for a total of 2.5 hours a week. A moderate workout routine would ensure the health of our heart.
  • Cut down on salt: Excessive salt in our diet can cause the risk of high blood pressure and this can further cause pressure on the heart. An adult should not take more than 6g of salt in a day. So regulate salt levels in your diet.
  • Monitor your weight: If you are overweight, you are likely to have high cholesterol and a high blood pressure. So regulating your weight is highly important to keep you healthy.
  • Alcohol: In moderation, alcohol does not affect you health, but excessive intake can affect your blood pressure and can even weaken your heart muscles.
  • Smoking: Smoking has many hazardous affects on the body. According to a survey, smokers are twice at a higher risk of having a heart attack then non smokers.
  • Eat food rich in omega 3 fatty acid: Omega 3 fatty acid keeps the cholesterol levels in control. Fish is rich in omega 3 fatty acids. Spinach, Walnuts, flaxseeds etc are rich sources for vegetarians.
  • Sleep: A good night sleep contributes greatly towards your health.  It keeps your mind fresh and your body relaxed.
  • De stress: Stress harms your body like nothing else does, so try to reduce your stress levels and try maintaining a healthy life.
