Delhi reported its first case of Omicron variant on Sunday. The patient had returned from Tanzania and is admitted to Lok Nayak hospital in Delhi.
Delhi’s Health Minister Satyendar Jain said that 17 people who reached Delhi from the “risk nations” have tested positive and have been admitted to the hospital till now. A separate isolation ward has been set up for these patients in LNJP hospital.
By Saturday evening, there were 13 passengers who were assumed to be infected with the new variant. Only one of these people had returned from Africa and the rest of them were from European nations and US. The samples were sent for genome sequencing and one was found positive for omicron. The contact tracing has started for the patients and all the primary and secondary contacts would be tested soon.
Delhi has become the fourth Indian location where Omicron has been traced. Two patients were traced in Bangalore, one in Gujarat and one in Maharashtra. The Mumbai patient is an unvaccinated marine engineer who returned from South Africa.
