Infertility has been defined as the inability to conceive if you had unprotected sex for a year and you are below 35 years if age. If you are women above 35 years of age, the time period would be six months.

Many times women menstruate regularly and yet find it difficult to conceive. Well, this could be due to the following conditions:

  • Blocked fallopian tubes: If the tubes are blocked then the sperm has difficulty reaching the egg and they do not fertilise. You could be prone to fallopian tube blockage if you suffered from pelvic infections or any other sexually transmitted disease in the past. Endometriosis is also a common condition that can lead to the blockage of the tubes.
  • Uterine problems such as
  1. Uterine fibroids: They are small polyps or benign tumours that can also block the fallopian tube.
  2. Unusual shape of uterus present from the birth
  • Cervical issues such as lack of adequate mucous for the sperms to travel. There could also be stenosis of the cervix ( narrowing of the cervix)
  • Endometriosis: A condition in which the uterine tissues start growing at other places. This condition directly affects fertility. It interferes with implantation of the egg as well.
  • Ovulation disorders: There can be zero or less production of the eggs from the ovaries. This could be due to ovarian insufficiency wherein there is premature loss of eggs from the ovaries. There could be too much prolactin production that can reduce estrogens production and cause infertility.
  • Life style problems such as
  1. Smoking
  2. Stress
  3. Obesity
  4. Excessive alcohol consumption
